Nayakan - Mani Ratnam

Scene One

Description : This is the scene where Kamal enters a room in a red light area and finds Charanya (a Prostitute in the movie and also Kamal's wife later on) cuddling in the corner and sheepishly asking Kamal to leave her early so that she could study for a maths exam.

BGM : Maestro comes up with a soul-stirring BGM in this scene and you can instantly catch the feeling that Kamal and Charanya are starting to trade hearts. Such is the mastery of Maestro over this scene.

Listen to the BGM:

Kamal enters the room and the camera goes behind the partition. It is a very dark room and the only source of light is from the table light.

Charanya asks from corner if she can be left early. Kamal watches her. Look at the beauty of this shot. We see Charanya (in yellow dress) only through the reflection in the mirror. kamal looks up at the direction of the voice.

Kamal asks without any remorse if she wants to do business outside if let early. He does this only through the mirror and heightens his passive connection with her so far in the scene.

She says that she has a Maths Exam the next day and she would practice a few problems for her exam. Kamal is shocked and he turns back.
Here is where the BGM of Maestro starts! The camera goes to Charanya's side and it shows Kamal through the screens. Mani Ratnam is brilliant to show this angle since it makes us feel with Charanya -"Oh my god! What is he going to to?"

Camera moves behind Kamal and we feel the suspense just as Kamal does. "Who is this girl?", "A school student for a prostitute?" "What is the voice behind the screen?". Let us remember that this scene plays as a forerunner to Kamal's love for her eventually.

Brilliant Camera shifts start. Kamal's back does not allow any light to come in. The only lighted part is the left side of the screen. More suspense!

Again Mani Ratnam uses his magic wand and tricks us. We see a shift in Kamal but the girls is yet to be seen! Now the light goes to the right side.
Charanya's face opens up. Her expression is sheepish. The Darkness of Kamal's back exaggerate the light on Charanya's face.

Without any mercy, Maestro starts titillating our hearts with the BGM. Pleasant guitar notes play with the backdrop of eerie silence.
Kamal asks her is she is studying and you can see him being shown from the partition. Kamal is shown with the white side screen. The translucent screen increases the light beamed onto the scene by the lightmen.

kamal is disgusted. Maestro's BGM has a solo violin that evokes sadness equitable to the guiltiness Kamal feels.

Kamal asks Charanya to study. Maestro's BGM continues with the earlier guitar notes repeating.
Kamal watches her proceed to the corner of the room. Lighting is minimum just showing the necessary.

She proceeds hesitantly. Maestro's BGM changes lead instrument.
Mani Ratnam portrays her Naivety as she turns back to see Kamal. Kamal is still watching her. Remember this is the same shot as the earlier one but P.C.Sriram's camera rotates in this one. The rotation resembles charanya's view of Kamal as she moves.

Camera zooms in on Charanya. Maestro's BGM combines guitar.

Kamal reclines and watches her work. He is in deep contemplation and is definitely moved by the happenings.

She is asleep. Notice the darkness in the scene. It is unbelievably dark but it is quizzical how Mani Ratnam has handled the lighting for whatever lighting is present. Kamal opens the door. Another Mani Ratnam dawn shooting schedule here. Charanya is shown in the same sleeping posture. Maestro's BGM emerges right when the door is opened and light gushes in.

As Kamal is about to touch her to wake her up Maestro introduces beautiful strings to add to the BGM that is already repeating. Deftly handled by Maestro.
